Project Description: 

Addressing CEFM as a barrier to improved SRHR requires a multi-pronged approach to improving access to, and quality of SRHR services focused on adolescent girls and young women, while simultaneously working to end the practice of CEFM. Youth Empowered will accomplish this through outcomes focused on empowering girls to exercise their rights and exert greater control over SRHR related decision-making within a supportive socio-cultural environment while building the capacity of community and health system structures to provide needed SRHR and CEFM prevention and care through a gender and adolescent friendly lens. Through these evidence-informed and complementary pathways, the project seeks to contribute to the ultimate outcome of “Enhanced realization of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of Adolescents and Youth, Particularly Girls (10-24 years old) in six sub-districts of Bagerhat and Sathkira districts of Bangladesh.” The project’s logical structure is based on WV’s commitment to a future without CEFM, recognizing the practice as a significant barrier to improving SRHR outcomes, to empowering women and girls and ultimately to gender equality.

Project Goal:

Enhanced realization of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of adolescents and youth, particularly girls (10-24 years old) in Bagerhat and Satkhira Districts.

Intermediate Outcomes:

1. Improved access to quality, gender responsive and adolescent friendly SRHR and psychosocial support services & information integrating CEFM prevention & response for married/unmarried adolescent girls and young women
2. Enhanced decision-making of married and unmarried adolescents’ girls, over their sexual and reproductive health and factors that contribute to CEFM
3. Strengthened and sustainable community capacity in project areas to advocate for, support, promote and sustain an adolescent-friendly, gender-responsive and CEFM-free environment for adolescent girls and young women

Project Models:

MenCare: An approach that educates men about equitable, nonviolent fatherhood and caregiving practices, and carve out a role for them in tackling gender inequality;

Citizen Voice and Action (CVA): A social accountability approach that aims to improve essential services (like health and education) by improving the relationship/dialogue between communities (rights holders) and government (duty bearers);

Channels of Hope:  An approach that motivates and builds capacity of faith leaders and faith communities to respond to critical issues affecting well-being such as gender equality and gender-based violence, and child protection

Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA): A Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) is a group of people who save together and take small loans from those savings. The approach provides basic financial services to underserved communities. They are owned, managed and operated by their members and are financially and institutionally sustainable. 

Major Activities:

• Train Community structures in monitoring, oversight and CHW support for adolescent-friendly gender-responsive SRHR services
• Strengthen community-based psycho-social support mechanisms for unmarried and married adolescent girls
• Assess and equip health facilities to provide integrated SRHR services and COVID-19 response
• Train Health workers on context appropriate SRHR and adolescent friendly counselling services
• Train Community Health Workers (CHWs) to conduct SRHR promotion and CEFM prevention and mitigation and COVID-19 response
• Provide technical assistance to communities to increase use of civil registration systems for birth & marriage
• Educators equipped or trained to provide Comprehensive Sexuality Education for adolescents
• Schools/Parent committees sensitized on issues of CEFM, CSE and SRHR and COVID-19 prevention.
• Youth club leaders equipped to provide comprehensive sexuality education, SRHR and SGBV messaging, and information on COVID-19 prevention 
• Adolescent girls supported in menstrual hygiene management to improve school attendance and prevent the spread of COVID-19
• Engage, train, and equip faith leaders to address harmful traditional practices, gender norms including CEFM and SGBV and the prevention of COVID-19.    
• Establish specific platforms to engage men as fathers/caregivers on SRHR and SGBV prevention including CEFM
• Train and equip local women's organizations to address harmful traditional practices, gender norms including CEFM and SGBV
• Sensitize communities on case reporting, referral, and monitoring for CEFM and SGBV
• Equip adolescent girls through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA)
• Train and support young women and men on local level advocacy and awareness raising on SRHR and CEFM
