Background:

Bangladesh has the potential to be a major global producer and exporter of shrimp and prawn. The country has brackish water pond resources suitable for farming shrimp in excess of 275,000 ha, and large areas of ponds, rice fields and natural water bodies where freshwater prawn could be grown. It benefits from favourable climate, soil and salinity conditions that would allow for two or more shrimp and/or prawn crops per year.

The aim of SAFETI project is to support Bangladesh efforts to achieve this potential.

Project Objectives:

• Significantly increase farmed shrimp and prawn productivity
• Increase production and national exports of shrimp and prawn
• Improve the quality of exported shrimp and prawn
• Increase the income of all value chain participants-particularly farmers.

Project Activities:

1. Inputs: Develop agro-dealers and /or other input suppliers (hatcheries, feed, etc….)
2. Financial services: Facilitate agricultural lending (NGOs, banks, other financial providers)
3. Training: Improved agricultural production technologies (Farmers Groups, ‘semi-intensive’ farmers)
4. Capacity Building: Government institutions
5. Promote improved policy and regulatory framework
6. Training: Sanitary and phytosanitary standards
7. Training: Post-harvest handling
8. Training: Improved marketing and branding
9. Market Access: Facilitate buyer-seller relationship
